This is an "After-the-FAQ" because it answers questions people tend to ask after downloading and using PaneKiller for a while. If you're curious about what PaneKiller does and whether you should use it, the answer is yes!
If your question is not listed here, please email me, firstname.lastname@example.org.
I don't like the "About PaneKiller" and "PaneKiller Properties" that appear in every PaneKiller menu... can I make them go away?
Yes, easily, but only if you register... I've put huge amounts of time and effort into PaneKiller, and while the shareware version is completely non-crippled and functional, if you don't want to pay $10 for it you can at least stand to look at some of my advertising.
Once you've registered, you'll notice the formerly disabled "Show PaneKiller About and Properties" checkbox, on the Contents tab of Properties, springs to life, and selecting it will rid your menus of these commands.
My registration code doesn't work...
It's possible, although rare, that I've given you an incorrect code. But before mailing me, please check the following:
I lost my registration code... (My computer crashed, my dog ate it, the CIA stole it because they wanted a copy of the coolest program ever: the list goes on...)
No problem, I'll give it to you again. It would be helpful, however, if you can tell me the approximate date you registered, when you write me asking to replace the code.
I've registered an earlier version of PaneKiller. Do I have to pay again for upgrades?
In general, no. At the very least, not until the next major version upgrade (2.0), which is enough in the future that I don't even know when it will be yet. And I probably won't charge for upgrades then, although I reserve the right to.
In the meantime, be the first on your block to download every version of PaneKiller as soon as it's available! Revel in the fact that fresh and new is always free!
Will I lose my PaneKiller settings if I upgrade to a newer version?
No. You can download a newer version, run Setup, and just keep clicking Next without making any changes, and PaneKiller will reinstall keeping your existing settings.
If you've already registered PaneKiller and entered your registration code, you will not even have to reenter it upon upgrading.
PaneKiller claims to expand shortcuts to folders (their contents should show up as submenus), but it's not working. How do I fix this?
This happens if some other utility misbehaves and deletes your IsShortcut key (here, as an example only!, is a description of this -- don't do it, it's the wrong approach, and this kind of reasoning is what broke your PaneKiller in the first place!) To get it back, you can download this registry patch, unzip it, and double-click FixShortcut.reg to restore your IsShortcut key. Or, if you're comfortable with RegEdit, you can add a string value named IsShortcut to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\classes\lnkfile.
